    I started off with b&w film, Pentax K1000 at school and a book to write down f stop and shutter speed for every exposure and away I went wandering through high school for a day or 2. Then dark room and spooled off the film to cannister to develop. Once developed, study each frame and choose which ones I would expose onto photographic paper and do test strips and finally pick the exposure I wanted. What a process!! What felt like 30 min in a dark room was 2 hours or more! I still have an old Nikon FG 20 and only recently during covid, sold my Bronica medium format, which now, I want to get another.

    Excellent stuff Justin, always enjoy your point of view. I agree completely, being able to realize a scene in the moment it is happening and having the tools and the mind to capture the event is super hard and can only benefit the filmmaker\cinematographer! This is an excellent video. This discussion about what an illustrator is and what a photographer is is almost the same as what a visdev illustrator for cinema is. There are tiers of illustrators in regards to skill and the higher you go in illustration, the more your illustrations need to come from something outside of representational aspects. It becomes poetry and drama and artistic reflex which is then translated to visuals that enable a more animated/truer depiction of whatever representational aspect exists in the composition (not abstract design). Great video.

  • @johnny_blz

    Noob question: i normally use an Xrite Classic Video color checker with the A7S3. If i expose to what is usually recommended as correct (+1.3/ +1.7) in clog3.cine with the zebras at 41% on mid grey im pretty happy with WB and color accuracy i get in Davinci Resolve doing the manual color correction on the vectorscope moving the hue vs hue and hue vs sat points. Will the spectrometer improve my exposure accuracy over my current workflow or should i just stick to my old method? Spending 600€ on a spectrometer is not exactly cheap but could be worth it in the long run if it allows for more accuracy.

    • @JustinPhillip

      it's really most useful when needing to match a lot of different sources, or just wanting to quickly match to a current WB.

    Thank God you made this video. I made a mistake in buying the Komodo-X production package only to find out that the included SmallHD monitor doesn't have EL Zone. I've been exclusively relying on EL Zone since its hit SmallHD monitors. I've bought a few Atomos monitors once I know EL Zone was added to those monitors too. My only work around is to learn Gio Scope and pray Red/SmallHD add EL Zone one day. I just love EL's color-coded labels. Makes it so easy to read and understand. Thank you again!

    Thanks for the video. This really saved me a lot of time and money. I was getting into the vintage lens world and was testing different lenses to find a set I can go with. After almost 2 months I revisited this video, did a little research and in terms of availability and cost the MCiii or Rokkor-X line really is the best choice in terms of accessibility. A lot cheaper right now than Contax Zeiss and easier to find mint copies versus the Russian vintage lenses. I'm going to Japan next winter so quite excited to hit the vintage camera stores and find my own set of MCiii lenses.

    Hey there, I'm considering this light for an upcoming still shoot in a working lead mine. I need a very portable battery-powered solution because once you're down there, you're down there for several hours with no outlets available. That said, I have two questions: Does this throw enough light (assume that I'll have two at a minimum) in a relatively dark environment? What type of usb-c power bank would you recommend? Your b-roll shows you using one but I didn't see it in the list of gear.

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip 11 дней назад

      Would not recommend. You would need a very powerful USB bank and at that point might as well just invest in a micro V mount such as this: amzn.to/4ccK1XY But the most you’re gonna get out of this light is 45 min., if you’re lucky

    Please buy a sound meter for fan tests and measure it from 1m. If you can afford Sekonic spectrometer you can afford sound meter like Extech SL250W ($99). You sound fan comparisons will become as scientific as your color and power readings :D Test with any mic does not make sense, because I do not know your mic levels, your camera levels and what you have done in post with that sound. Anyway the best review of B500 I've seen so far. I guess I'd stay with Aputure :D. Their new 600C seems to be as powerful as this one, and have G/M shift control - but is like 4x more expensive :D

  • @JoATTech
    @JoATTech 14 дней назад

    I actually enjoyed this one. Yes, we should be using light meters and not depend on EL zone, but for the sake of the video, the EL zone represented the full image as a visual reference.. The point came across, especially when you mentioned the script. It all starts and ends with what’s on the page. I just shot a documentary that had no script but still went through my logline and the interviews, and now I’m shooting 2 more shorts before end of the month here in LA…. one story has both high key and low contrast and the other is a horror with barely any lights. I appreciated the video. good job

    Another Master Class on lighting with some of the shiniest objects being filmed. The R/R Tape Recorder has both reflective plastic drags and metallic pulls and having the VU meters with their normally bright Mixed Yellow/Orange lighting and plastic lenses are taken care of in a fantastic manner. You found all of the right tools onsite, that you would have normally had in your own toolbox. I did not have very many light guys that would take the time to provide such significant details. Nice Job, and fantastic video Justin.
